"Shouting" about FOSSFA/ict@Innovation at the first African IGF in Cairo 2-4 OCtober 2012

It was a great week for FOSSFA's ict@innovation marketing team in the first week of October 2012. Fresh from the community workshop in Dar Es Salaam where the idea to move forward with various initiatives were mooted related to self sustenance, the opportunity came to create awareness about FOSS initiatives particularly LPI certifications and FOSS business models at the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) held at the Smart Village in Cairo, Egypt. The marketing team was represented by me (Isaac Kigen) and Evans Ikua. We met and engaged with a number of representatives of organizations that we may engage with to expedite our aspirations as a Pan African organization. As a matter of fact the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), an international organization whose mission is "to empower and support organizations, social movements and individuals in and through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to build strategic communities and initiatives for the purpose of making meaningful contributions to equitable human development, social justice, participatory political processes and environmental sustainability", interviewed us on what we do-the interview is captured on video. We further discussed how we can engage in Africa as most of their member countries are from developing countries. It is important to point out that there are a number of people from North Africa particularly from Egypt who are eager to participate in activities in sub-saharan Africa. One such person is Mandy Taha who works for the Library of Alexandria and a new member of the FOSSFA family, is so enthusiastic with initiatives that touch on  use of technology to advance economic and social development. Indeed she even created time to show us around Cairo and giving us the real "Egyptian experience" rather than the one you experience in tourist hotels! This would not have happened without the generous support from GIZ and other  partners like UNECA. They enabled us to get a stand where we set banners advertising ict@innovation initiatives. Please see the photos showing our team.
