Software Freedom Day Activity in Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi had a series of SFD activities planned.

The first was student challenge which was organised on 31st August at Strathmore University. During this day a number of students made presentation on IT projects that they have developed or are currently working on that are based on FOSS.

A number of interesting projects were demonstrated.

On the 1st of September a conference was organised that brought representatives from Government, universities and private businesses. It was encouraging to have the ICT Secretary from the Kenya Government, Dr. Kate Getao attend the entire morning session. In her keynote presentation she challenged the FOSS sector to generate more skilled personnel. She noted that the government is keen on using FOSS but has challenges in identifying FOSS experts who can implement and maintain these technologies. This remark highlights the gaps and opportunities that exist in the Kenyan FOSS space. Entrepreneurs that attended keenly followed the presentation and took note of these statements.

Jon ¨Maddog¨ Hall also gave an interesting presentation that gave the history of the development of FOSS to its current state of maturity.

Parallel to the conference was an exhibition in which FOSS based businesses were presenting their products and services.
