Dear ict@innovation Community,

As we mark the half way of 2011, ict@innovation looks back into the last six months of programme implementation. In this edition of our ict@innovation newsletter we review our achievements in 2011 thus far, including a detailed overview of the completed FOSS Business Models Trainings, and take a preview at the highlights awaiting us in 2011, including upcoming events and activities.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all partners for their ongoing engagement and to thank you, the ict@innovation community, for your interest and support.

[Continuity under a new name – GIZ successor organisation to GTZ, DED and InWEnt
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH, Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst gGmbH (DED) and Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung gGmbH (InWEnt) are pooling their long-standing expertise in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. On 16 December 2010, GTZ, InWEnt and DED signed a merger agreement.  With the merger DED and InWEnt will be integrated into the legal structure of GTZ. From the beginning of January 2011 the company will operate under the name Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Partners and Friends,

Another quarter has passed and much has happened in the programme: we are happy to say that all components of the ict@innovation programme, business models, certification and application building are up and
running.
In this edition of our newsletter we will update you on the programme activities, including current trainings on FOSS Business Models and promotion of FOSS certification. Last but not least we have launched the component "FOSS applications" with the Mentored Internship Programme in cooperation with AVOIR. Mr. James Kariuki Njenga, the manager of the Mentored Internship Programme, has successfully started work and we are happy to have him aboard as one of the team members of ict@innovation.

At this point we would also like to say thank you to all those who keep contributing to the success of ict@innovation, including the team, trainings, participants and partners.

And one more message to our readers: If you have any news on FOSS in Africa, if you are working on a FOSS project or would like to learn more about the possibilities FOSS offers - Please do not hesitate to contact us and tell your story or ask your questions!

Greetings from the ict@innovation programme management team! Half way through 2009 we are happy to update you on the progress of ict@innovation – the programme is well under way, trainings on FOSS Business Models have commenced, and ict@innovation has continued growing and forming new networks to promote the use of FOSS for business in Africa and overseas. During the next months, we look forward to celebrating Software Freedom Day, continuing with the trainings, kick-starting the programme component on FOSS certification and building our network and community.

Dear Madam/Sir, dear ict@innovation community-member,

as the African Coordinator of ict@innovation, I can reflect back on a very
successful year 2008 where we, the partners of ict@innovation (InWEnt,
FOSSFA & OSISA), advanced the project to where it is today. I will
highlight a few of the notable successes and achievements and mention key
expectations for the beginning of 2009. As we happily and gracefully say
good-bye to 2008, we still look forward to the coming year, 2009. We thank
the sponsors of ict@innovation BMZ and OSISA for their continued support.
Most of all we thank you, the participants, community members, project
partners and supporters for giving ict@innovation a successful start! We
hope for your continued support in 2009 and look forward to engaging in
further discussions, actions and collaboration!

Appointment of the African Project Coordinating Office based in Pretoria, South Africa. George G Nyambuya was appointed effective 18 August 2008 as ICT@Innovation Project Coordinator.

October 2008    
The ict@innovation Steering Committee Meeting was held on the 13-15 October
2008 in Johannesburg. The main programme partners met and mapped the way forward for the project.

October 2008   
The ict@innovation Certification Workshop was held from the 15-17th of October 2008 and included more than twenty participants from across Africa. The workshop enabled the exchange of ideas on and approaches to FOSS certification in Afrika.

November 2008   
The ict@innovation Office was presented with an opportunity to meet the FOSSFA
Executive team during the I-Week at AiTi-KACE, Ghana. FOSSFA appointed a substantive coordinator for their offices in Ghana effectively November 2008.

December 2008   
Call for co-editors for training materials on FOSS Business
Models in Africa as a first step to implement the high level training
program on FOSS Business Models for IT-companies. (More information on the

2) OUTLOOK 2009: EXPECTED HIGHLIGHTS

HIGH LEVEL TRAININGS ON AFRICAN FOSS BUSINESS MODELS

Starting Spring 2009, ict@innovation will host four regional, high-level
trainings on African Business Models based on Free and Open Source Software
(FOSS). A detailed schedule of dates and venues will be put online at
www.ict-innovation.fossfa.org soon.

PROMOTING QUALITY YET AFFORDABLE FOSS CERTIFICATION

In 2009 ict@innovation will intensify its work on spreading certification in FOSS skills.
Some of the upcoming activities will include: the compilation and development of training materials to prepare for a certification exam, revision of existing examination procedures, and the training of trainers on a regional level, who will qualify themselves to become certifiers.

FOSTERING INNOVATIVE LOCAL FOSS APPLICATIONS THROUGH INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES

ict@innovation is planning to offer mentored internships for software
developers seeking to improve their FOSS skills and create innovative
applications. This internship programme is currently being designed and
will kick-start in 2009. If you are interested, please get in touch via
